The potential of trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Iran significantly exceeds the current figures of trade turnover. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, assessing the prospects for bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.
Speaking in an interview with an Iranian media corporation, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the current level of mutual trade does not reflect the real capabilities of the two economies.
"We really have immeasurably more opportunities than the current level of trade," Sergey Lavrov said, answering a question about the economic potential of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.
According to the minister, in order to reach higher trade volumes, it is necessary not only political cooperation, but also systematic work to create favorable conditions for business. We are talking about stimulating economic operators, reducing administrative barriers and timely fulfillment of obligations on the part of government agencies.
Lavrov paid special attention to the development of transport infrastructure, which is a key factor in the growth of mutual trade. In particular, he recalled the project of the railway section of the western route of the international transport corridor "North–South", implemented in Iran.
"We are looking forward to the completion of the work of the Iranian authorities on the purchase of land plots, which will allow us to actively begin and complete the construction of this approximately 160-kilometer section of the railway," the minister said.
The North–South corridor is considered as a strategic route capable of connecting Russia, Iran, the Persian Gulf countries and India, significantly reducing cargo delivery times and logistics costs. For participants in foreign economic activity, the launch of a full-fledged railway service means the expansion of export opportunities, the growth of transit traffic and the diversification of trade flows.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and Iran was signed on January 17, 2025, during the visit of Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian to Moscow. The document provides for deepening cooperation in the economy, transport, energy, industry and other areas of mutual interest.
Experts note that the implementation of infrastructure projects and the synchronization of customs and logistics procedures can turn Russian-Iranian cooperation into one of the key elements of the Eurasian trade architecture.
