- Price: The most pleasant one. Tariffs can start from a ridiculous $0.3 per kilogram. By the way, Russia has recently become an important transit hub for Chinese goods, because familiar routes like the Suez Canal are overloaded.
- Railway: Reliable express and the golden mean
- When needed: When you want to find a balance between the speed of an airplane and the price of a ship. Ideal for most consumer products.
- Speed: 15-25 days from Shenzhen to Moscow is quite a decent result.
- Price: Moderate. Rail transportation is becoming more and more popular. In 2023, China shipped a record 161 million tons of goods to Russia, which is 36% more than a year earlier. However, there is a disadvantage: the infrastructure does not always cope with such a flow, and "traffic jams" may occur at the border.
- Cars: Flexibility is our everything
- When needed: If your destination is located far from major ports and railway stations. Vehicles can get anywhere.
- Speed: 15-25 days. The routes often transit through Kazakhstan.
- Price: More expensive than by rail, but cheaper than by air. The main advantage is security (the cargo travels in a closed container from door to door) and the ability to transport specific goods, for example, requiring cold.

- Documents are everything. Commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of conformity — everything should be in perfect order. Experienced brokers, as a rule, prepare all the papers in advance so that there are no surprises by the time the cargo arrives.
- Pre—declaration is your "cheat code". Some companies file a declaration in advance, even before the cargo arrives. This reduces the registration time to a ridiculous 4-24 hours.
- Kazakhstan as a "green corridor". Many cargoes transit through Kazakhstan, as procedures have been simplified within the Eurasian Customs Union.
- The price of a mistake. An incomplete package of documents or an incorrectly specified product code — and your cargo "freezes" at customs. There is a known case when a whole batch of children's toys was detained in Irkutsk simply because of the lack of declarations. This is not only a waste of time, but also the storage fee at the customs warehouse, which drops every day.
Pitfalls: What does business really face?
It would be unfair to paint a rosy picture. Logistics with China is not only an opportunity, but also a real challenge.:
- Infrastructural bottlenecks. There are still not enough roads and railways on the border to cope with the growing flow of goods.
- A sharp rise in prices. Since 2022, the cost of shipping a container has jumped from $6,000 to $12,000, and air freight, as we remember, has tripled. This should be included in the budget.
- Unpredictable delays. Due to port congestion, customs checks, or geopolitics, delivery times can take up to 90 days. Imagine that you have been waiting for your product for three months!
- Security risks. Unfortunately, cases of cargo theft, especially on the railway, are not uncommon. It was reported that since November 2024, some Chinese companies have even suspended railway transportation through Russia due to these risks.
- Mother Nature. Do not forget about typhoons in China (from July to September) and the harsh Siberian winters, when temperatures drop to -50 °C. All this makes its own adjustments to the schedules.
What's next? Trends that change the rules of the game
The world does not stand still, and neither does logistics. That's what's happening right now.:
- New railway routes. In 2022, a direct train from Shenzhen to St. Petersburg was launched, which runs for only 18 days.
- A bet on the Arctic. China is seriously considering the Northern Sea Route as a future alternative to the southern routes. It still sounds like fiction, but work is already underway.
- River routes. The Tongjiang–Khabarovsk river route opened in 2025. This is a local but important step for the development of regional logistics.
- Adapting to a new reality. The departure of major global carriers (Maersk, MSC) from Russian ports has forced businesses to quickly reorient to railways and motor transport through neighboring countries.
