Russia and Iran have announced the beginning of the formation of an integrated transport and logistics system in the Caspian region. The project will combine the maritime, aviation and port infrastructure of the two countries, creating a single space for cargo transportation and customs cooperation.
According to the Iranian Fars news agency, the aim of the initiative is to strengthen transit ties, develop regional trade and turn the Caspian Sea into a center of Eurasian logistics integration. The new system will become a key link between the North–South corridor and Russian transport networks, increasing the volume of cargo transportation between the Persian Gulf and the Volga to 25 million tons per year.
Work has already begun — joint projects in the field of port infrastructure are being implemented, in particular, container and refrigeration terminals in the Iranian ports of Anzali, Amirabad and Astara are being upgraded. At the same time, the launch of a regular air cargo transportation line for the transportation of perishable and highly profitable goods is being discussed.
In addition, the countries intend to create the Caspian Single Window system, which will simplify cargo clearance and significantly reduce customs processing time.
To coordinate the initiatives, it was proposed to open a Common Caspian Logistics Secretariat at the Tehran Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the United Chamber of Russia and Iran. Additionally, the Caspian Logistics digital platform will be launched, allowing cargo tracking and online booking of shipping lines.
The project is considered as a new stage of the strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran, aimed at developing mutually beneficial routes and increasing the role of the Caspian Sea in world trade.
