The new rate in annual terms exceeds 30%, provided that the goods are continuously stored in the warehouse throughout the year. Sellers with large inventory balances will be most affected by the change: the higher the refund amount for goods on the FBO, the more noticeable the increase in daily write-offs.
Along with the increase in the tariff, Ozon introduced the "declared value" tool: the seller has the right to independently specify the valuation of the product from which the insurance premium is calculated, and thereby reduce daily costs. The mechanism works both ways — in case of damage or loss, compensation will also be calculated based on the declared amount, and not on the market price. If the seller has not specified the declared value, the fee is calculated from the refund limit set by the marketplace.
From the very first day of the new rules, sellers recorded a discrepancy between the stated formula and the actual write-offs. There were reports in professional chats that the marketplace calculated a percentage of the price in the personal account, and not of the refund amount. As a result, the actual write-off turned out to be higher than it should have been under the new conditions.
On Monday evening, at about 18:30, Ozon recognized the problem and published an official message stating that insurance premiums are now being calculated correctly.
For importers who use Ozon as a sales channel and store large shipments in marketplace warehouses, the tariff increase becomes an additional item of logistical costs. When planning supplies and calculating the unit economy, it is worth considering the new rate already at the pricing stage, especially for products with a long sales cycle. The advertised cost option provides a tool for managing these costs, but requires an informed decision on the acceptable level of insurance coverage.
