Starting from September 1, the obligation to accept digital rubles applies to trading enterprises with annual revenue of over 120 million rubles. The button will not appear the same everywhere on marketplaces: it all depends on the business model of the site and who is the seller of it. Sellers should figure out their role in this scheme in advance.

The Bank of Russia has outlined how the digital ruble will be accepted on trading platforms after September 1, 2026. Technically, this form of payment is already available, but the obligation to accept it in 2026 concerns large trading enterprises with annual revenues of over 120 million rubles, said Alla Bakina, director of the Department of the national payment system of the Central Bank.

For marketplaces, the answer to the question "whether a button will appear" depends on the business model of a particular site and the status of sellers on it. The difference here is fundamental. According to one scheme, the site itself acts as the seller to the buyer, and the responsibility for accepting the digital ruble falls on it. According to another theory, the site works as an agent, and the seller remains the seller — then the threshold of 120 million rubles is calculated based on his revenue, and the obligation arises for him.

For Seller, this means three practical tasks for the coming weeks.

The first is to define your role. It is enough to raise the current offer and see who is indicated by the seller in the contract with the buyer and on whose behalf the receipt is being issued. It depends on whether the requirement applies to the company or not.

The second is to calculate the revenue. The threshold of 120 million rubles per year is already reached with a turnover of about 10 million rubles per month, that is, not only large businesses fall under the requirement. Companies that balance on the border should document the calculation.

The third is to clarify the transfer procedure with the bank. The digital ruble is stored on an account in the Central Bank's platform, rather than on a regular checking account, and the mechanics of transferring funds into circulation from banks vary in terms of terms and fees. For trading with a thin margin, the difference of one or two days on deposit is noticeable.

The digital ruble is of particular interest in foreign economic calculations: the Central Bank's platform is being built as an infrastructure for cross-border operations with central banks' digital currencies. So far, this is a prospect, but companies that are already connecting to the reception inside the country will get access to this infrastructure cheaper.
