The spans of a new automobile bridge over the Tumannaya River were connected on the Russian-North Korean border. The bridge will connect Khasan (Russia) and Tumangan (North Korea). The construction was carried out simultaneously on both sides. After the completion of the work and the opening of the checkpoint, this will be the first road crossing between the countries — until now there was only a railway connection.

The railway bridge over Tumannaya has been operating since Soviet times. There has never been a road crossing between Russia and North Korea. On May 30, 2026, the spans of the new bridge docked — builders from the Russian and North Korean sides met in the middle of the river.

The opening of the checkpoint and the start of regular traffic is the next stage: the completion of infrastructure on both shores, customs and border control equipment is required. No specific dates have been officially announced, but the docking of the spans is the final construction phase.

Where is the crossing and what is behind it

The bridge is being built between Khasan (Primorsky Krai) and Tumangan. Khasan is a border point in the very south of Primorye, which already serves rail transit. Nearby are the ports of Posyet and Zarubino. Geographically, it is an outlet to the Sea of Japan through Russian territory.

The logistical meaning is straightforward: if the bridge opens to trucks, North Korea gets direct land access to the Russian transport infrastructure without overloading to the railway. The Russian side receives an additional transit corridor bypassing the traditional routes through China.

Context: The Far East as a logistics cluster

Over the past two years, a dense transport infrastructure has been formed in the Russian Far East. The Blagoveshchensk–Heihe Bridge opened in 2022 and now serves the first unmanned flights. Terminals in Vladivostok and Nakhodka are being expanded. Kanikurgan Customs and Logistics Center is increasing its capacity. The bridge in the DPRK is the next element of this system.

What does this give the business?

There are no direct commercial opportunities at the time of docking yet — the checkpoint is not open. But for companies operating in the region or planning logistics through the Far East: keep an eye on the opening date. When the crossing is operational, it will create an alternative transit corridor with direct access to the port of Tumangan and further to the ports of the Sea of Japan.
